Having recently had children diagnosed with Dyslexia, a group of parents came together to form a much needed branch of the Dyslexia Association in Co Offaly. The primary aim of the group is provide support and information for parents and focused workshops and activities for the children locally, where the children can meet other children who too have dyslexia.
The Offaly Dyslexia group are affiliated to the Dyslexia Association of Ireland (DAI) which was founded in 1972 by parents and teachers who too were concerned about the lack of awareness of dyslexia and the absence of provision for children with dyslexia within the Irish school system.
The association lobbies for the provision of appropriate services by the state to all dyslexic people. Some of the services the DAI provide are
An information service to the public
Psycho- education assessment of children and adults
Group and individual tuition to children and adults aged 7-18
In-service courses for teachers
